Frequently Asked Questions

Formatting Submitted Items Formatting Submitted Items

Your submissions are formatted automatically when they appear on the Alumbo! website. You do not need to understand webpage design or HTML. However, if you desire, you can control some formatting in designated fields. These fields may contain certain HTML tags to create bolding or italics, headings, bullet points or numbered lists, and to link to external web pages or graphics.

You are responsible for proper HTML syntax if you intend to use these features, and your item must "clean up after itself" - that is, you must terminate any block tags so you don't affect any other web content. If your submission does not conform to these standards, it will not be approved. You are expected to understand HTML coding; Alumbo! does not offer assistance or editing for HTML syntax.

The following tags may be used in designated HTML fields:

<P> start a new paragraph (with a blank line before it)
<BR> start a new line (with no space between lines).
<H2> and </H2> these tags are used around text you want displayed in a larger, bolder font, such as titles of major sections. Similarly, you can use <H3> through <H6> to format subsections and lesser titles (H4 uses a smaller font than H3 which uses a smaller font than H2). For example:
<H2>This is a headline</H2>   would appear as follows:

This is a headline

Note that the H1 tag is reserved for page headers and may not be used in HTML fields.
<B> and </B> used around text you want bolded
<I> and </I> used around text you want italicized
<U> and </U> used around text you want underlined
<OL> and </OL> used to mark the beginning and end of a set of numbered points
<UL> and </UL> used to mark the beginning and end of a set of bullet points
<LI> and </LI> used around an individual bulletted or numbered item within a <OL> or <UL> block
<IMG> used to insert a graphic. The image link must exist when the item is submitted for approval, and the format must be as follows:

<IMG SRC="http://www.website.com/graphic.gif" ALT="Alternate text" HEIGHT="height in pixels" WIDTH="width in pixels">

<A HREF> and </A> used to insert a hypertext link. The link must exist when the item is submitted for approval, and the format must be as follows (it must be an "http://" hyperlink):

<A HREF="http://www.website.com/webpage.html">Click here to go to the webpage.</A>

No other tags may be used. If you wish to use a less-than sign ("<"), use the HTML escape sequence "&lt;" (without the quotes). Also note that any HTML tags used in fields not designated as HTML fields will be treated as actual text and will not affect the formatting of that field.

If you do NOT include any HTML tags in the field, the system will attempt to automatically format it for you. This includes creating clickable hyperlinks, bullet lists, headings, and so on.

To preview how your submission will appear on the website, click the "Preview" button at the bottom of the form. You will be shown a page with your item properly formatted (including any HTML tags you entered), and can then submit the item for review and approval.
