Frequently Asked Questions

Become a Community Leader Become a Community Leader

Current Community Leaders, click here to manage your community(ies).

Here's your chance to get involved with material of real interest to you, and to meet others who share the same passion! We're looking for volunteers to help lead our communities. We provide you with the tools and website, you provide your time (typically only a few hours per week).

Our Community Leaders essentially act as guardian and facilitator for their chosen community. Community Leaders are encouraged to contribute their own editorial material (feature articles, commentary, etc.), but that is not a requirement of the role. Your responsibilities do include:

  • reviewing and approving all content items that are submitted to your community (you may turn off this requirement, but you are still expected to spot-check new submissions to ensure material is relevant and appropriate)
  • moderating your community discussion forums
  • seeding your discussion forums with interesting and provocative topics to stimulate dialog
  • fielding questions, concerns and suggestions submitted by visitors and members; responding promptly and appropriately to these queries
  • regularly (ie: weekly) submitting links to products, websites, offsite discussions, etc. that are relevant to your community

Qualities we look for in our Community Leaders include:

  • Objectivity - reviewing and approving submitted material, as well as adding relevant weblinks and other resources yourself, requires an unbiased understanding of the subject matter and a respect for various points of view within the community. You should guide the community, not take it over.
  • Patience - moderating online discussions and responding to member and visitor inquiries requires forbearance and tolerance — you will find yourself repeating the same messages multiple times.
  • Responsiveness - you will be expected to react quickly and flexibly as questions and issues arise. Instinct and judgement are important here, as well as speed and decisiveness.
  • Matching Values - our Community Leaders represent Alumbo, and as such must promote and adhere to our guiding principles and values.
