Frequently Asked Questions
A. The application is our indication of who you are and what your abilities are... so present your best face! Include the information requested and any additional information you believe will demonstrate your ability to fulfill the role. Q. How soon will I hear from you after I apply to become a Community Leader? A. It depends on the number of applications we're processing that week. We will get back to you as soon as we possibly can — we need you! Q. Do I need to know any HTML, web design, or programming? A. You don't need to know any of these — you'll do most of your work simply by filling in online forms. Q. What's involved with reviewing and approving submissions? A. Community Leaders are expected to review and approve content items that are submitted to their communities. You are not required to proofread, critique writing style, or otherwise provide editorial services — your role is to protect the integrity of your community by screening submissions for appropriateness and relevance, ensuring items meet with Alumbo's acceptance criteria and providing feedback to submitters whose items are not approved. Q. What if I can't keep up with all the submissions? A. If the volume of submissions to your community proves to be too much, you have the option to disable the requirement to review every single item, and may instead periodically spot-check your pages and archives for appropriateness and relevance. However, you run the risk of degrading the quality of your community and increasing visitor disatisfaction. Alumbo! will work with you to determine how best to handle growth rates in your community. One logical solution is to add several subcommunities under your community. These subcommunities will accept submissions of a more detailed nature, leaving only the more general items for the original community. Q. What's involved with moderating online discussion groups? A. Community Leaders serve as moderators for their community discussion forums. In this area you are responsible for starting and maintaining discussions on topics related to your community, and monitoring the ongoing discussions for appropriateness and relevance. For example, you are expected to ensure discussion forums don't deteriorate into a series of personal attacks, or become inundated with blatantly commercial messages ("spam"), or similarly inappropriate content. Community Leaders can delete messages deemed inappropriate, and can recommend the suspension of privileges for members who violate the Alumbo! Terms of Service. Q. Do I have to have my own web site to do this? A. No, but those who have personal or professional web sites are encouraged to cross-promote them. Q. Who hosts and maintains all the information? A. We do. Alumbo! collects all content, and then develops, hosts and maintains all the web pages. Q. How seriously do I have to take this and how much responsibility is it? A. Being a Community Leader requires a serious effort akin to a part-time job or a volunteer role. It is meant to be a truly fun and enjoyable experience. It's about taking a Community you're passionate about and sharing it with the world. Q. How much time is required of me? A. The time necessary to maintain a community depends on your level of expertise, how much research you'll have to do to keep your pages new and interesting, and how much time you have available. The goal of Alumbo! is to provide the most useful, relevant, and enjoyable experience on the Internet. We estimate that an average of 5-7 hours per week is sufficient for you to develop and maintain a quality community. Q. What support do you provide to your Community Leaders? A. We provide the tools, website and processes to help you create and maintain your community pages. We also provide a variety of other services such as promotions and free web-based applications that can be used to enhance your community's content and traffic. Alumbo!'s sales and marketing staff may provide special offerings, promotions, services and utilities to compliment your work. And of course, our entire team of Community Leaders are available to offer their guidance and support. Q. Am I expected to manage the subcommunities under my chosen community? A. No, but you are welcome to. Each community and subcommunity has its own Community Leader. Typically, higher-level communities receive submissions of a more general nature, whereas subcommunities get progressively more focussed on specific topics. Choose the community(ies) that you feel you have the most expertise in and/or are most passionate about. Q. How many communities am I allowed to lead? A. You may volunteer to lead up to five communities. Q. What happens if my community is split into subcommunities? A. If you currently lead a community that is split into several subcommunities, you will continue to be the Community Leader for the original community. In addition, you may opt to lead the new sub-communities as well (perhaps just temporarily until new Leaders are selected), but that is not a requirement. Before going ahead with changes like this, we typically discuss and ask for input from our Community Leaders. Q. Do I get paid for my efforts? A. Alumbo! plans to implement a revenue sharing plan that will allow Community Leaders to share in the advertising revenue that their pages generate. Be sure to subscribe to our email updates (see your Member Profile page) to be notified when this program is launched. Q. What if I just want to submit my work or content to Alumbo! instead of becoming a Community Leader? A. Please feel free to do so! All Alumbo! members may contribute content to the site. It's easy and does not require any special knowledge or software. Click here for more information. Q. Can I be both a Contributor and a Community Leader? A. Certainly! As an Alumbo! member, you may contribute content to any community on the site, not just the one for which you're the Community Leader. Q. I participate with another website. Can I be an Alumbo! Community Leader? A. Sure. We appreciate experience, and we think you should be free to participate wherever you want. You are responsible however to ensure you don't violate any agreements you may have with those other websites.
