Family TraitsThe Essence Of Who We AreA regular column by Clara B Freeman, Aug 19, 2007
How many times have you heard someone say, "you look just like your mama?" Or, "You have you dad's stubborness?" Comparing ourselves to our families have been a tradition handed down through African-American families for generations. I have photos atop my computer desk of my deceased mom and younger brother. Although they're both are in what I envision to be a heavenly place, I find myself sitting at times, studying their profiles and wondering what is it of herself that mom left me/why do people say my brother and I could literally pass for twins, when I was and am his elder... I'm aware of Genetics; the physical attributes this all entails, but how uncanny that patterns of speech and mannerisms come into play as well. As I age, I find myself sleeping on my right side, oftentimes with my left arm extended the length of my body...it's exactly how I remember seeing my mom sleeping. My dad was very opinionated and headstrong...His word literally sealed the deal. There was no other argument to be had...done, finished... end of conversation. Although not quite as stoic in his debate mode,my son doesn't feel the need to entertain opinions of others. My daughter and I both cry when watching sappy movies, all too aware of what blubbering fools we are! Yet, we can never pass up a good tearjerker, although not without a box of kleenex in hand.
Rae is my beautiful 12 year old granddaughter. The firstborn of 4 granddaughters, I've spoken of her before. She has a compassionate heart; questioning why it is that little children become victim to abuse and neglect, oftentimes leading to their demise...This child has an old soul. The sassiness of my 6 year old reminds me of her mother, my child when she was exactly that age. When I reflect upon my family. My children/grandchildren/remaining brothers and sisters, I began to see them with a different 'eye'. I take note of their laughter, frowns, voice, their zest/enthusiasm. I try to envision how I'd remember them as time passed. I love the idea of being compared to my littlest Lissie, named after me.I can only hope that what my family sees in me,becomes a family trait worthy of rememberance.
