A Single's Lament

Summary:
I don't know about you, but, I have to admit, this is one babyboomer who's got a thing, or, two to say about 'that'

I'm talking of course, about pet peeves. I have a few that I'm about ready to elaborate on. The first and perhaps, the most serious for me is : Getting sick and having to go to the emergency room of somebody's hospital!

I've often referred to the emergency room as a place that sick people go to in order to hurry up and wait! I know, I'm ragging a bit here, and I really shouldn't, just because of my profession alone...I'm a nurse, and I do have the insider on how things are done in the hospital.

Supposedly, it works like this: The sickest person that comes into the emergency room is chosen first. The priority in the case of a gunshot victim as opposed to say, a dog bite...both serious analogies. Who is seen first? My theory would be, the gunshot victim, simply because, of the situation. Hospital personnel are trained to 'assess' the needs of the patient first. We do this by objective reasoning, as in what we see happening with the person and by subjective reasoning as in what the person is telling us... Therefore, if the person with the dog bite is alert, talkative and able to verbalize well, then that person would be considered second for care as opposed to the person, shot and bleeding buckets of blood.

Yet, because I'm knowing the rationale behind seeing patients in an emergency situation, I shouldn't be perturbed at having to go into an emergency room and wait, right? Wrong! I'm still a human being with the views of a lay person when I have to go to an emergency room in order to hurry up and wait... I think the whole emergency protocol should be expanded to include us all in a reasonable amount of time...

The other thing that bothers me as I transition in this 2nd phase of life, is the fact that I have to shop for groceries! I abhor going grocery shopping. I suppose one look into my paltry pantry cupboards can attest to this. Grocery shopping is tedious. The foods are expensive and the crowds of people with their carts invading your walk space is annoying. I delay having to grocery shop, until I've drank the last of my favorite orange juice and the solitary egg I had for breakfast just this morning sends a silent message of 'I'm tired of being eaten alone'

I suppose the pet peeves will stay with me forever. At this point, I see no way out. I've tried to tell myself that things will get better and I won't have to voice my rants.

And to look on the bright side of things; pet peeves have their place, in my life as well as in yours...
