Suzanne: Virtual Coaching Session #2A woman on a quest for her best life discovers... Abundance!A regular column by Sarah Pond, Feb 08, 2004
(This is session number two for Virtual Coaching client, Suzanne. Please read Suzanne: Session # 1 to be fully up to date on her coaching journey...) At the outset of session # 2, Suzanne shared that although her challenges and circumstances were the same, she was delighted to be experiencing more energy, more motivation and more enthusiasm about her future. She said, “Having clarity on what I truly want – the details of it – really makes the possibility of having it more REAL to me. It’s like, now that I can see it, it’s easy to imagine having it! And that gives me the energy and motivation to keep moving…” She had written down in specific detail want she wanted in her life. Her goals include 1) a new home, 2) a better-paying and more fulfilling job, 3) savings in the bank, and 4) more quality time with her significant other. I was happy to see that she had written these goals down in really precise detail; she was able to describe the exact elements of the home she wanted for herself and her kids – a 3 bedroom rancher, clean and new, in the next town over. She realized that the more clearly she could picture her goals, the more energized she felt about taking steps to make it happen. I noticed that something dark and negative kept cropping up amidst her bright pictures. It was like a black heavy cloud was hovering over her dreams – and Suzanne kept alluding to it. She kept repeating, “but I can’t afford it”. I asked Suzanne what she experienced when she said “but I can’t afford it”. She answered, “It makes me feel afraid and paralyzed. All of a sudden I can’t see my goals anymore, and I get lost in a fog wondering how will I ever afford anything I want.” After checking with Suzanne to see if she wanted some information that will help her shift out of those feelings of fear and paralysis, I introduced her to some of the basic principles of Abundance: There is more than enough to go around. You can have exactly what you want and the universe supports you to have it. Every resource you need is readily available to you. You will be perfectly abundant in money, love, time, energy and everything the instant you open yourself to the possibility. I urged Suzanne to never, ever again utter the words “I can’t afford it”. This phrase is a killer. It drains all hope and energy from any endeavor. It is the main tenet of the opposite of abundance: SCARCITY.
Scarcity claims, “You can’t have it, you may as well not even try. Good things and prosperity are reserved for a privileged few, not you. You do not have what it takes to have what you want and you never will. You are crazy and stupid and wrong to think that you can have it. Give up right now, before you make a fool of yourself. Oh, and by the way, you can’t afford it!” Walk away from the experience of scarcity! The law of abundance supports you and your goals. Abundance claims, “Oh yes, you can have it. It is already yours. If you can imagine it, you can have it. You can afford it, you just need to realize HOW.” Instead of “I can’t afford it”, ask instead, “I want this. How will I afford it?” See how the possibilities open up with this question? Suzanne jumped all over the concept of Abundance and asked for more information. Luckily, there are many books and websites devoted to the law of Abundance, so it’s a cinch to learn more about it. But most of all, abundance is something that starts on the inside. We often get caught up in the lie that if we do this and this and that, then maybe one day (if we are very lucky), we will experience prosperity and abundance. The truth is that it’s the other way around: First we shift to abundance on the inside, and then, prosperity and abundance in all things flow to us like a magnet. You have to feel abundant in order to receive abundance! I recommended that Suzanne explore abundance and watch what appeared in her life as she opened herself to the possibilities of abundance. She agreed to: 1) Say, “How will I afford this?” instead of “I can’t afford it”. 2) Make a list of everything she is abundant in already. 3) Set the intention of being abundant. 4) Watch for changes in her life as she makes the inner shift to abundance. Although Suzanne ended this session feeling upbeat, I knew that she needed some real-life practical tools to support her in the major shifts she was making in her life.
