Put Your Mind to It

Summary:
Would hypnosis make you do things you don’t want to do? Absolutely not; as a matter of fact, that would be impossible.

You’ve probably seen those movies on television about how the evil hypnotist makes the normally good, upstanding citizen go out and commit a crime. It makes for a good plot, perhaps, but it is definitely not portraying the truth about hypnosis. Would hypnosis make you do things you don’t want to do? Absolutely not; as a matter of fact, that would be impossible.

These are the most common misconceptions about hypnosis:  The hypnotist can take control of you and use your mind.  The hypnotist can implant ideas or suggestions to make you do things you would not be agreeable to doing.  It’s possible to be put so deeply into hypnosis that you can’t come back out.  Hypnosis is harmful.  Hypnosis is evil.

None of these beliefs are true. A trance can be so light that you will feel no different than usual, except that you will feel very relaxed. No one – whether a hypnotist or anyone else – has the power to make you do things that you would not ordinarily do. When you watch a stage hypnotist bring audience participants up on stage and then hypnotize them to believe or act out odd or comical situations, that hypnotist is an expert at choosing people who are exhibiting very suggestible behaviors. The stage hypnotist is extremely skilled at picking people who would make perfect “subjects”.

You cannot be put into such a deep trance that you would not be able to come back out. Although there are ultra-depth and somnambulistic trance states, they are rarely used for ordinary life situations, and even these trance depths do not prevent a person from coming back to normal awareness. If a person were left alone in a trance state without any suggestion to return to normal consciousness, that person would still come out of the trance state within a short period of time.

There is nothing at all harmful about hypnosis. It is simply a state of super focus and concentration where the conscious mind is bypassed in order to work with the subconscious mind. Everyone has a built-in belief system, and no one can be made to violate that belief system. Any suggestion given that goes against a person’s own moral code or core beliefs will be rejected, and sometimes such a suggestion makes the person return immediately to normal awareness.

Hypnosis is not evil. There are many, many pastors and church leaders who use hypnosis as part of their pastoral counseling.

Hypnosis can be a very valuable tool for altering or changing common life situations and problems. It is easy and can last a lifetime. But hypnosis is not for everyone.

In order for hypnosis to be effective, the following is required:  Absolute and unshakeable commitment to the change you want to make  A belief that you can reach your goal  Trust in the hypnotist and the process of hypnosis  A willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed, including following suggestions  The understanding that YOU are the one doing the work

The adoption of certain attitudes will also be of great help in reaching your goals:  You cannot change your life story if you keep telling it the way it WAS.  Understand that in order to get something, you will have to let go of attachment to something. Letting go opens up a space for what you want.  Staying focused on the goal, no matter what you are experiencing, will bring it to you faster. Visualize or feel the outcome you want to live.  Your actions need to match your intention in order to realize success. You cannot gain something if you are always thinking about and/or feeling lack.

So even though hypnosis is a very safe, easy, and effective way to create the changes that you dream of, you have to be willing and ready to accept the changes. If you are unable to follow the requirement in the first list noted above, then hypnosis probably will not work for you.
