Using Self-Hypnosis To Get Truly Grounded

I am moving home in a couple of weeks time and I plan never, ever to move again. Ever. It has been a torrid affair. Now we move on to getting removal men in gear and all the stuff that goes with moving into a brand new home.

We are also combining what is supposedly one of the most stressful things to happen in life, with also planning our wedding. Now that is taking some planning – it is fun and enjoyable, yet can be quite testing and challenging at times.

So then, as well as finalizing wedding plans and moving home, I have been recording for a new TV show on BBC1. Add to that – I have a new book I am writing, a very busy therapy practice, a diploma course that I am running, new audio products to record and time that I love spending with the love of my life, my own personal development, and a social calendar… These past few weeks have been rather manic, rather busy and one evening last week, I sat down and found my head was spinning!

My head was spinning. Buzzing with thoughts, considerations, ideas, stimulus of all kinds…. It is nice to have lots going on. I like to make sure I can wind down too though.

You see, every now and then we need to get grounded… When our head is up in the clouds, we need to bring it down again! At least for a period of time. We are more balanced and much more effective that way.

For some, being grounded comes easier than for others. We all feel the need to be grounded for one reason or another at one time or another. So if things are being a bit chaotic or seem to be in turmoil, here is a great way to see that order is restored.

I recommend that you do what you can to be in a place where you are undisturbed, comfortable and with your arms and legs uncrossed. This technique then helps you find a more relaxed state, a more grounded state from which your perspective is more balanced.

Step One: I recommend you learn how to take yourself into self-hypnosis – go get my self-hypnosis book, it is well worth the small investment for the skills it teaches you. However, in the absence of such, focus on your breathing, slow it down, engage in the moment, move your awareness inwards and really tune in to your body.

Use any relaxation or meditation technique you may know to get into a truly receptive state of mind and having a nice relaxed body. Take all the time you need to do this step thoroughly – the receptivity and stillness you create is what is going to amplify this technique to make it so very effective for you. Be sure to get very good sense of how your body is feeling in this moment.

Step Two: Having really tuned into your body, now imagine, sense, or just visualise the last bone of your spine – often referred to as the tail bone. Do know that it is solid, although it has evolved to a very small bone. It is still firmly attached to the rest of the spine and exerts a downward pull just from its position as the last bone of your spine. Really get a sense of your tail bone, how it feels – sense it being there.

Imagine that you tie a cord to this last bone, the cord can be any colour you choose; imagine the colour, the texture, the qualities and sizes of this cord. Make sure it is really firm, and give it a little tug just to check that it is completely secure.

Step Three: Next up, just let the cord fall to the ground. Watch and imagine it falling through the ground as it then plummets toward the centre of the earth. The cord is long enough to reach the very centre of the earth with enough left to tie securely to any object there. Take your time, watch the cord going deeper and deeper so that when you feel that you have reached the centre of the earth, look for an object to tie the cord securely. It could be a tree, or a rock or whatever you want it to be, absolutely anything. Tug at the cord to show yourself that it is firmly fastened.

Step Four: Now here is where things get even more interesting… Imagine that the cord suddenly becomes more solid, like a pipe, and the diameter expands so that it is wide enough to fit comfortably under your hips. You have the feeling of being able to sit on it and of being firmly supported. Notice the texture, colour, and firmness of the object. It may look and feel like a chair or bench, or it may just feel and look like a pipe. Take this time to know the object of support or grounding as you see it. Again, take all the time necessary to really imagine this carefully and in detail and in the best way for you.

Step Five: The we get on to some of the lovely stuff… Imagine that you breathe in deeper breaths of love and goodness from the universe, and as you breathe out, you let any lingering worries, doubts, and fears you have accumulated move down the pipe or object at the end of your spine and down to the centre of the earth. Ensue that you focus on the good feelings, calming you and easing you and not the things you are letting go of. Breathe in and out several times in this manner and feel the release, imagine the relief, as you let go of any chaos and replace it all with love and goodness from the universe. You might want to give th love a colour or make it shape itself in some way – you decide what is best for you.

Step Six: When you feel that you have completed a total release, a really good letting go… Excitedly, you are ready to move onto a higher level….

Imagine, sense or visualise a golden light above your head, let it expand and move through every part of your body. Let it fill your body until you are overflowing with it. Breathe in the golden light. Just imagine taking on lots of unconditional love.

Step Seven: When you are ready, wonderfully filled up with the loving golden warmth and energy and full of love and peace and joy, open your eyes, wiggle your fingers and toes, and smile, go on have a BIG smile…. letting your joy, peace, and love radiate to the world.

I do this to really get grounded, calm and at ease. Have a go at regularly doing this exercise and you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to keep life balanced and in perspective.
