Summary:
This article is about the importance of communication in a work environment. Listed are five reasons we struggle to communicate effectively in our daily lives and ways to fight through those mental barriers, to achieve lifelong communication skills.

Importance of Communication Our friends, family and spouse are all people we believe to be important enough in our lives to communicate well with on a daily basis. What about at work? Do you find it hard to talking with confidence ? Do you spend more time hiding behind your computer than approaching others? Sending emails instead of talking to people face to face? Included in this article are 5 ways to break through shyness and face your fears and realize the importance of communication. 1. Working with difficult people When you are working in a social setting like an office or a hospital or even construction, working with difficult peoplemake it harder for many people to work effectively. Sometimes it is just one person who can make it hard on everyone else. Often times it is a group of people who make it difficult for everyone to work. Often times, it takes courage to approach these people and ask them a simple question-wasting time by hesitating and causing unwanted stress in the process. Get your confidence up. The people you fear most will respond better to someone who takes charge, speaks on their level and is not afraid to approach them. There are several companies who offer public speaking classes, as well as communication skill classes. Taking the first step to joining a confidence boosting class is already a step in the right direction. 2. Communication Skills Some of the best skills one can attain in life are communication skills. No matter if you are in the political spotlight, the mail clerk of a huge enterprise or a door to door salesman, knowing how to communicate well and talk with confidence can get you far in life. Your communication skills are what set you apart from people who can't communicate effectively. Being able to speak your mind, encourage other people to think like you and sell them on your ideas is sometimes necessary- just to get by. Practice makes perfect- as they say, and what couldn't be more true when learning how to communicate effectively. Strike up conversations everywhere you go- talk to the librarian, the grocery store, the auto mechanic and meet all of your neighbors. Putting forth the effort to communicate a little each day is a start to building your communication skills. 3. Talk with confidence You can approach everyone in the world you want to- but if you can't talk with confidence, then you may be doing more harm than good. Many times your company will invest in hiring team building professionals who can help you speak loud, clear and with assertion. Take advantage of these classes if they are offered- your company is investing in you. Take baby steps to feeling fully confident. Volunteer to be a speaker at a wedding, church or your son or daughter's campfire troop. Easing in with smaller audiences you trust will make it easier to speak in front of a more intimidating group of your peers later. 4. Initiate group activities The best way to learn how to communicate effectively is to practice talking with people. If you are the person organizing events, after work happy hour or even buying some pizza for the office- you open the doors to get people engaged and talking. Organizing or joining outside of work activities can make the most difficult people you work with, the most enjoyable. Less stress, no phone calls and a relaxed atmosphere encourages casual conversation. Never say no to a company picnic! 5. Importance of communication It can't be stressed enough. The importance of communication is the connection between you and your peers. It is the reason we make phone calls, send emails to make solid connections and get our message across. Keep an open door policy with your staff or encourage one at work. Make a suggestion box. When you can talk with confidence- your communication skills improve. People will respect you and you assertive way of initiating your ideas. If you work with difficult people, only your ability to try and communicate effectively will make it an easier place to work. Get motivated! Take classes! Initiate a gathering and get communicating! About the author: Melissa Peterman is a web content specialist for Innuity.
